When Was Dog Licence Abolished: A Historical Perspective

Dog licenses in the UK were discontinued in 1987, a change that was subsequently followed by the implementation of a set of dog control measures outlined in the Environmental Protection Act of 1990 and the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991. The discontinuation of dog licenses marked a significant shift in how dog ownership and regulation were managed in the country. The inception of dog licensing in the United States traces back to March 8, 1894, when New York State introduced its pioneering dog license law in New York City. However, historical assessment records from the Town of Henrietta reveal that the concept of an annual dog tax was in existence even earlier, dating back to 1864. During that period, dog owners were required to pay a fee of $0.50 for this tax. This 19th-century practice marked the nascent stages of formalized dog licensing in the United States, which has since evolved into a widespread and essential regulatory measure across the country.

The history of dog licenses in the UK dates back to the 19th century. Initially, the requirement for dog licenses was established by the Dog Licences Act of 1867. However, this mandate was frequently disregarded by dog owners, resulting in only approximately half of them obtaining licenses.

To address this issue, the Dog Licences Act of 1959 reinforced the obligation for dog licenses, making them mandatory once again. Despite the reintroduction of this requirement in 1959, many dog owners still failed to comply with it. Therefore, in order to better enforce dog licensing, subsequent changes and updates were made in the UK’s legislation regarding dog ownership.
